QuestionIn Word 2013, why do my Checkpoint Tools documents open in ‘Read Mode’ and are no longer editable?
Answer
We have received reports from customers that when opening their saved PPC documents in Word 2013, they open in the “Read Mode’. The Word ribbon no longer displays, and the documents are not editable.
There are two known scenarios where this is known to occur.

Scenario 1 – Checkpoint Tools Documents:

In Word 2013, if you open a document and select the ‘Read Mode’ option from the ‘View’ tab on the menu ribbon, this puts the document into “Read Mode” with editing disabled. If you then close the document while in this state, the ‘Read Mode’ will not persist when reopening the document. It will reopen in ‘Print Layout’ mode.

However, when in “Read Mode’, if ‘View/Layout/Paper Layout’ option is selected and you then close the document, that state of the document is captured. When reopening the document, this or any other Word document, will open in ‘Read Mode’ and will not be editable.

This functionality applies to all Word documents and whether PPC’s products are installed or not.

To change the “Read Mode” back to ‘Print Layout’ mode:
-          Open the document
-          Select “View/Layout” and switch the “Paper Layout” option to “Column Layout” (default setting).
-          Close and reopen document.

Scenario 2 – SMART Image Documents (SMART Docs):

In Word 2013, when opening SMART Image documents (these are protected), these will open in the “Read Mode” state if the option to “Open e-mail attachments and uneditable files in reading view” is selected in Word options. The SMART docs are uneditable by their nature, but if you prefer that they open with the Word ribbon displaying, deselect this option.

Microsoft has made changes to the ‘Read Mode’ functionality for Office 2013. It functions somewhat differently from previous Word versions. (‘Read Mode’ was known as ‘Full Screen Reading’.) They explained that the functionality in the “Read Mode” is per design.
